Here is a first look at the BING APPS chapter for "Windows 8.1 Book." This chapter focuses on the various Bing content apps in Windows 8.1—Bing Finance, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, News, Sports and Travel—plus Bing Maps. For now, I've blocked a section for the Modern utility apps that are included as well, but could be broken out into another chapter.
This is currently very rough and incomplete, but I wanted to ensure that my idea for this chapter would work. That is, most of the Bing content apps work the same way from a navigational perspective, so I could just cover that up front and then highlight several unique features in each app—the hand-waving stuff in Food & Drink, HealthVault integration in Health & Fitness and so on—in their individual app sections. And it looks like this will work, though I've already found some weird inconsistencies in these apps that I'm going to pretend will be fixed because they're so obvious.
Anyhoo. Just an early peek, mostly for the chapter layout. I think we need to cover the Modern utility apps that aren't covered elsewhere—Alarms, Calculator, Help + Tips, Reader, Scan and Sound Recorder—somewhere in the book. It's just not clear that here is the right place. It may depend on how long this chapter gets. It may depend on the phase of the moon. We'll see.
More soon. Feedback is always appreciated.
