Here is new update to the BING APPS chapter for "Windows 8.1 Book." This one includes a new section about Bing Finance (though I have one sub-section to add later) and includes a reconstruction of the chapter flow that actually reduces page count. Which is fine: There was too much repetition previously.
While each of the chapters has an introductory "Visual tour" section (which I think I'd like to rename, but whatever), this section is particular important to this chapter because the Bing content apps—Bing Finance, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, News, Sports and Travel—are so similar, from both layout/navigation and functionality perspectives. So the Visual tour section is pretty long in this one chapter, and that lets us avoid repeating the same information for the many apps this chapter covers.
Previous to this update, however, I had included sections about saving items to favorites (though each app calls this something different) and pinning items to Start. It was super-repetitive, and while I had originally figured I'd keep it that way because some apps (like Bing Sports) just don't have a lot of other unique features to talk about. But as the writing progressed, I realized this was a mistake. So in this update, those topics are moved out of each app section, and into the more general Visual tour section. The result? 6 fewer pages. And a lot less repetition.
It's also probably messy, as surgery often is. As I work on the next update, I'll make sure this is cleaned up and made consistent between each app.
More soon. Feedback is always appreciated.
Remember, you can download the latest version of this and other chapters, and the full book in progress, from the download page you have hopefully already bookmarked. If you haven't yet paid for the book, please get a copy of the book today.
